ATA Bargaining

Alberta Teachers' Association Labour Action

OVERVIEW

Current Situation

SEPTEMBER 3, 2025 - The Alberta Labour Relations Board has certified the results of the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA – the provincial group responsible for negotiating with Alberta teachers) request for authority to lock teachers out, if necessary.
Please be assured, a lockout is legislated part of the bargaining process and is a common response to a strike vote. Even though TEBA has authorization for a lockout, this does not impact current operations for Lethbridge School Division.
In this context, a lockout can be considered if there are potential operational concerns in Division schools stemming from job action.
Schools are open and continue to operate, and we will provide updated information as it becomes available.

AUGUST, 29, 2025 - The Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA) met with the Alberta Teachers' Association Central Bargaining Committee this week to continue negotiating a new central agreement. At this point, a settlement has not been reached.

JUNE 10, 2025 - The Alberta Teachers' Association (ATA) reported June 10 that 94.5% of members voted in favour of strike action.

What Happens Next?

For now, it is business as usual in Lethbridge School Division.

If the ATA decides to commence labour action that would have an impact during the school day, the union must provide school boards with 72 hours’ notice.

The ATA has 120 days to commence labour action, unless a resolution is reached between the provincial government's Teachers' Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA) and the ATA.

Bargaining Process

Bargaining between TEBA and the ATA occurs centrally at the provincial level. This means that items like teacher salaries are set through the provincial collective agreement, not through individual school boards. Local bargaining between Lethbridge School Division and Lethbridge Public Local 41 can only commence once this process has been completed.
